A weekend trip on a very busy lake with less than ideal conditions produced this personal best 6.70 pounder.
As the first trimester of 2026 smallmouth fishing is within a few days of ending, a few observations…
Well over 400 smallies caught starting on April 10
One fishing method skipped as shallow fishing happened early
28.19 was best five fish weight, several over 24 lbs
The average size seems better than recent years
Warm weather has brought many more boats to the lake
Weekends (unless bad weather) are a real challenge now
I'm already thinking about the first trimester of 2027 but until then
"BIG lake here we come!"
Be safe my friends.

Good fishing for our friends from Kansas as they figured out the "jb bite" pretty fast…
Twenty five beautiful brown fish with a 5.90 as best of the day!
Fun day with good folks!

Happy Mother's Day weekend!
We started at 28 degrees and it was slow for an hour not because of temperature but the lack of wind. And when it blew it came to life.
Twenty very quality smallmouth and one surprise largemouth (and we were done by noon).
Best five were 4.50, 4.96, 4.15, 3.97 and 5.26.
I had a hearty guest who endured the conditions.
Thanks to Quiet Cove Baits for the great paint job for these clear water bass.
Enjoy!

First guest of May was very happy with the results in spite of a starting temperature of 25 degrees…
Even on a Saturday with many boats on the lake we had big numbers of quality smallmouth.
Very anxious for this week's guests as three methods currently very productive.

Eight over four…
During slick, glassy times I like to downsize my jbs but couldn't because they were inhaling it–way deep. Had to go big and remove a set of hooks as to not injure these treasures.
Saving the better spots for my guests.
Next week's groups will endure the cold and be rewarded!
Note:: State launches to the north still closed. We drove up after "work" yesterday and found Intermediate roped off.
Notice last bass pictured?
