The big water is still the most consistent.  However, a couple smallies over 5 lbs. did come from inland waters this week.  But yesterday several 3 to 5 came from the bay.

Many fish were suspending or chasing baitfish on the breaks.  O ur new finesse methods were very successful yesterday.

Best smallmouth fishing of the year, perch and walleye grouping in predictable places, whitefish becoming very catchable and now bird season has arrived.

I am excited!  I sleep very well!  I have to budget fish cleaning into the day.  This is when the perch meet the freezer.

If you want big numbers and the occasional 5 lb. smallie get up here in September and allow enough days for the weather to allow us to get on the big water.

Many midwestern bass fishermen treat September as one of the worst months. Before 1997, I did too.

Then I woke up. Stop texas rigging in 10 ft. or less like you did in May and June.

Find the baitfish and you are on your way.

I won or placed high in many Indiana tournaments with all my fish coming out of 28 ft.
Prior to 1997, I plugged away for the few fish that had moved shallow.

Apply that to my current situation and you are consistently catching over 100 per day with several days exceeding 200. All small fish? No.

Yesterday in the first hour, 44 smallies up to 4.2 lbs. The majority were 13″ to 16″ fish.

When in our area for the famous smallmouth fishing, stop in at Jack’s for all your fishing needs.  Artificials, live bait, licenses, outdoor wear and all the latest fishing information.

Over 60 keepers with many being 17-18″ fish.  And maybe 30 or so short fish.

And yes, a loveable drum!

I think this is the best time of the year to fish in our area if you like smallmouth.

A mid season mention is in order for the folks at FISHING COMPLETE INC. for getting their very effective soft plastics to us in such a quick fashion.  Two-thirds of our fish today came on the Case SINKIN SALTY SHAD.

90 fish in 7 hours.  I’ll take that kind of fishing anytime.  Especially when there are some 4 lbers.  mixed in.

 

Come to the Traverse City area in September and/or October if you want big numbers of smallmouth.

Spring is good if you like to jerk bait fish but NOW is the time to come if you want big numbers.  Our weather is pretty stable now.  This means that 3 out of 4 days we can get on the big lake.

Like yesterday this means 100 smallmouth per day for two fishermen.
