These postspawners have an awful lot of eating to do in order to get that “healthy glow” back.
They will look much different in a month!

Happy 250th! Hope you enjoy and appreciate this special Independence Day.
The fishing transition continues as there seems to be more and more postspawners chasing baitfish and gobies. I, for one, will be happy when the transition is complete and they recover from the spawn.
Finding the food is usually our shortcut to finding smallies but there seems to be baitfish everywhere. Until the “food” transitions to normal summer areas we have to work harder.
We are at the midpoint of our 2026 season and I am excited for the July, August and September smallmouth fishing.
The first half was very good…

A 6.90 lb smallmouth and a 6.22 lb smallmouth were the stars on an unexpected day off.
I was able to go to areas that I normally frequent in late July and August. I stayed off the areas where we’ve had recent success and may not have had another bass fisherman within five miles.
Besides the two biggies there four others over 4 lbs and three other smaller fish.
Do I have a pattern on these new fish? Not much of one. Only one fish on a spot and no other cruisers. Two lonely patches of vegetation, isolated wood, thick rock worked. Depths ranged from 4’ to 19’. Certainly no pattern on this experiment!
Good moon coming soon…

Much better weather conditions than Monday—a nice southerly breeze, warmer air temperature, and an approaching front.
And during a three hour window we had aggressive fish. My Indiana guest had quite the day as some deeper fish were attached to some grass and the skittish rock dwellers finally cooperated.
Boating 18 up to 5.80 lbs is a good “June day” but it’s going to get better—much better!
Observation: Vegetation growth is behind schedule. Some of the traditional June spots may not hold fish for a few more weeks.

VERY GOOD fishermen endure less than perfect conditions to get a couple fives before the high winds arrived.
And I was worried we would not have enough wind…
Wow!

Quality fish on an inland and the big lake…
Nothing over six lbs but a very good average.
Half were postspawn and the “chunks” were prespawners.
Fun stuff…
